Faction PvP is opt-in. The later September note explicitly requires joining a faction before a PvP quest. The earlier opt-in note says new players start factionless and can leave through their faction representative. Read the later requirement before the older faction-or-quest wording.

The later rule: join a faction before PvP quests

The September leveling/PvP announcement requires joining a faction before entering a PvP quest. It also says PvP quests no longer replace your faction with outlaw: targets are members of the other faction. The same announcement adds the Town Square PvP arena and dueling. Earlier opt-in and matchmaking changes

The August opt-in announcement allowed a faction OR a PvP-specific quest to enable combat. Its quest exception is historical wording: the September prerequisite is the later published rule. The August note also introduced invasion score for matching.

The August QoL note moves the PvP hunting quest spawn to the second camp and protects hunters from non-target factionless players. These changes should not be attributed to the September arena update.

How the opt-out note says to leave

Single source: the official opt-in note says to talk to your faction representative to leave a faction; new characters start with none. Avoid factions if you want the intended PvE-focused experience. The cited notes do not specify an exact representative location or a full list of faction bonuses.

The official opt-in note says new players begin without a faction and can avoid factions for PvE-focused play. Later PvP quest entry requires joining a faction.

Can a PvP quest flag me without joining a faction?

How do I leave a faction?
